A Firsthand Look at the Fight Against Trump’s Budget Bill

Today, I joined a group of parents and families from across the country on Capitol Hill to urge members of Congress to reject Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”—a piece of legislation that would gut healthcare, slash food assistance, and funnel even more wealth to the rich. If passed, it will devastate American families—especially Black, Brown, and low-income communities—and stall American progress for generations.
I woke up at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday in our nation’s capital with one goal: convince congressional Republicans this bill is a bad deal for working families. I also knew it would be a tall order. We are parents of color advocates, many of us from the South—people whose communities would be among the hardest hit. We knew that just walking into these offices meant inviting judgment simply because we were nonwhite.
